Hi, my name is Joshua Mathiason, and I’m a fitness trainer and personal health coach. My goals with my clients are to match them to the best workout for their personal needs and to help them achieve their workout goals. Today I want to discuss the issue that I’ve found to be the most common factor that undermines people’s long term health goals. It might surprise you to learn that it isn’t a lack of personal discipline, laziness, or a lack of focus. It’s alcohol.
When people come in for their workouts to my gym, I don’t have any problem getting them motivated and excited about the workout…unless they were drinking the night before. That is the absolute worst impediment to an effective workout, in my opinion. Sure, there are worse drugs, but people taking those generally don’t have long term health goals.
So, what are the problems? Alcohol has a major impact on your digestive process. It causes the release of excessive amounts of insulin which in turn causes your body to metabolize glycogen. This throws a wrench into the fat-loss issue because it makes it difficult for you to lose fat. It also interferes with the body’s ability to absorb and utilize B vitamins which, as you probably know, will ultimately result in anemia and deficiencies of many nutrients.
Granted, sometimes you just feel like having a nice cold one. It can be “just the thing” on Friday after a hard week at work. Sometimes being able to relax with the help of a little alcohol can actually have a healthy benefit because of the release of mental strain. It’s just important not to overdo it. After all, you’re going to have to work out the next day you need to balance it with a few cold, hard realities.
As a result of your perceived need to imbibe, you’re going to have a little less strength than normal and your heart and lungs will not be functioning at full capacity. So all I’m suggesting here is keep your health goals in mind, and when you do decide to drink, do so in moderation and remember to be respectful of your body and your goals.
